54 A passport filled with crossed finish lines Why Valencia? Instead of border crossing stamps, SuperRunners collect finish lines crossed, races completed and half marathons conquered. That is how the international SuperHalfs circuit works. The challenge is simple and, judging by the more than 50,000 runners who have already embarked on their SuperJourney, tremendously exciting: it involves completing the six most famous half marathons in Europe once during your lifetime. Each finish line crossed adds a medal, a story... and a new stamp in the runner’s passport. Once a SuperRunner completes the series, they can lift their trophy: the famous SuperMedal. The SuperHalfs is not just a collection of locations ticked off on a map; it is an invitation to travel through running. Or to run while travelling. To discover Europe at your race pace and share the road with thousands of runners from around the world. To add life experiences from the Atlantic breeze of Lisbon to the famous roar of the crowd in Valencia, passing through the iconic streets of the centre of the continent... in running shoes. When the world sees all the SuperHalfs bibs and the excitement of those inducted into their own Hall of Fame, it wonders: what is it about Valencia? What makes it different for the more than 11,000 international runners who took part this year? There is no simple answer. For many, the SuperHalfs is “like playing in the Champions League of running”. Something unrivalled, because “this is the only sport where you can do something like this”, said Rebecca at the finish line, with her giant six-piece medal hanging around her neck. In fact, the objective of the SuperHalfs is purely sporting even though it also involves an essential element of enjoyment, personal achievement... and tourism. In other words, travelling around Europe with a pair of running shoes in your suitcase. But there are also those who choose Valencia as their final stop because of its flat route. It is, officially, the fastest half marathon in the world, and that does not go unnoticed among grassroots runners seeking to set their personal bests. However, even though the personal stories are what gives meaning to the SuperHalfs, there are two other reasons that, according to international runners, set Valencia apart from the rest: the climate, despite this year’s rain, and the vibrant colours along the streets during the race. Because the rain did not hinder a record number of runners crossing the finish line, nor did it dampen the cheering along every kilometre of the route. It is clear that finishing off the SuperHalfs on Valencian soil is the international adventure that every runner dreams of.
