More than 6,000 runners in the Valencia Half Marathon were taking part in the Plátano de Canarias National Running Circuit Run, have fun... and help others. That is the philosophy behind another of the iconic half marathon series in which Valencia is involved: the Plátano de Canarias National Running Circuit. What does it involve? For every kilometre run by each runner who crosses the finish line in one of the five long-distance races included in this challenge, one kilo of Canary Island bananas will be donated to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). The results give you goosebumps: around 40 million kilos of bananas have already been delivered to those most in need since the circuit was launched in 2020, according to the organisation. The series includes races in Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián and the Valencia Half Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich, and more than 280,000 runners have now completed at Every kilometre counts... and contributes least one of them. In 2024 alone, nearly 30,000 finishers completed one of the races as part of this nationally pioneering initiative. Of these, more than 600 have managed to complete the full five races in the circuit to receive the coin that completes their now classic holder, forming a joint medal. This year, in Valencia, just over 6,000 runners taking part in this circuit crossed the finish line on Avenida de Tarongers, and around a hundred completed it in the Ciudad del Running. This meant that around 120,000 kilos of Canary Island bananas were added to the total basket, to which, in 2025, the weight of fruit from the Behobia-San Sebastián race in November still needs to be added. Another record-breaking figure.
