FINISHER'S MAGAZINE

113 Iván crossed the finish line with his “grandparents' flag” Iván cruzó la meta con “la bandera de los abuelos” Parecía extraña la bandera que Iván portaba al cuello cuando cruzaba la pasarela de l’Hemisfèric. Esa composición catalano-manchega tenía que responder a algo. Bingo. The flag that Iván wore around his neck as he ran along the walkway by the l'Hemisfèric seemed strange. That combination of Catalan and La Mancha symbols had to mean something. And now all is revealed. It was his “grandparents' flag”. That's what this ecstatic finisher called it, he ran from kilometre 21 with a sprain just because, at the Plaza de Toros, he collected a piece of cloth that, for him, has immeasurable significance. “My grandparents once told me never to forget my roots and to always be proud of them”. So, his way of honouring them is to finish all his races wearing this flag that represents his family's origins. However, Iván does not rule out adding some Valencian symbols to his banner. Because, with this one, he now has five medals from the Valencia Marathon... so Valencia is also very much part of his history. We look forward to seeing how his story turns out.
